Can you imagine maintaining your passion for your work for three decades? We at the Library are excited to celebrate Margaret, who recently received the Long Service Award from the university for her remarkable 30 years of service at HKUST.

As an officer in our Resource Management section, Margaret has played a crucial role in managing collection resources. This team is responsible for acquiring materials, maintaining access to e-resources, and ensuring our catalog remains updated and user-friendly.
Throughout her time at HKUST, Margaret has navigated significant changes in the library landscape. Thirty years ago, most library materials were in print form, and computing technology were very different. Although she has remained with the same team, she has embraced each new change and challenge with eagerness to learn. “If there’s nothing new for me to learn, I go out and search for it,” she says, exemplifying the spirit of lifelong learning that enriches our library community.
Margaret began her career in the cataloging team within Resource Management, where her attention to detail proved invaluable. The team creates metadata that adheres to international cataloging standards, ensuring that you can easily find the resources you need while allowing HKUST’s bibliographic records to be utilized by libraries worldwide.
As information technology and library operations evolved, Resource Management underwent a reorganization a few years ago. Margaret was among the first to adapt, taking on new responsibilities beyond cataloging and learning acquisition processes. Her insightful questions when learning something new often led to improvements in our workflows, making her an agent of driving change and innovation.

A highlight of Margaret’s proactive approach to her work is her commitment to sourcing hard-to-find materials. She builds strong relationships with vendors and goes the extra mile to secure rare items for our collection. One notable success was acquiring “Reading Antique Cartography: Historical Chinese Maps in the British Library (方輿搜覽 : 大英圖書館所藏中文歷史地圖),” an out-of-print atlas that is now part of our Special Collections.
Outside her core responsibilities, Margaret passionately volunteers as an HKUSTour docent, enriching our community. Participants often commend her warmth and engaging style during their tours.
Thank you, Margaret, for your 30 remarkable years of service! Your relentless curiosity, dedication, and passion for improving our work continue to inspire us all. Here’s to many more years of growth together!
