Lucy is our student intern who actively participated in our project “Tales from a 1493 World Map: Playing with Augmented Reality (AR)” during the 2024/25 Spring Semester (Mar-May 2025). See below the words from Lucy regarding her experience on this project!

This project is funded by a generous donation from Dr. Ko Pui Shuen

Introduction

This project has been a meaningful collaboration with a diverse group of students and library staff. Throughout this process, I learned to showcase my work confidently and have effectively improved my communication skill by expressing our thoughts and sharing ideas freely during our regular progress meetings. Additionally, I gained deeper insights into ancient maps, thanks to the contributions of everyone involved.

My primary responsibility was to create 3D digital models in Blender, producing approximately three models each week. This included twelve wind god heads and ten accessories, which will be integrated into an AR interaction feature on the webpage. While the workload was manageable, I developed better time management skills and engaged in self-directed learning, utilizing online resources like YouTube and ChatGPT whenever I encountered challenges when modelling. After three months of work, I believe my 3D modelling skills have improved significantly.

My Works

Here, I will briefly showcase the work I accomplished during this project.

Initial Model of Wind Gods: The first model featured a sharp, realistic face (Fig.1). Closely look alike with the depiction on the ancient map (Fig.2).

After group discussions, we decided that the initial model (Fig.1) was too intense for AR, so we opted for the cuter style (Fig.3). Following that, I began designing the twelve wind god heads.

Here are some of my works showcasing various hairstyles for the twelve wind gods.

Additionally, below are models of accessories designed for the monsters.

We identified some characteristics of the creatures on the map and allowed them to combine freely with one another.

Challenges and Solutions

Throughout the project, I encountered several challenges. Before creating each wind god or accessory, I conducted online research to gather information about their appearance and characteristics. However, the names of the twelve wind gods were often confusing—sometimes sharing the same English or Latin names—which made it difficult to find corresponding descriptions. Consequently, I primarily based the appearance, including hair and iris colours, on the representations in the ancient map.

I followed various YouTube tutorials for modelling different objects, which significantly enhanced my experience with Blender and honed my self-learning skills. Every time, I had to troubleshoot errors independently, reinforcing my problem-solving abilities. For most of the models I created, I utilized Blender’s sculpting feature—a new technique that I explored during the project. Initially, I relied on edit mode for shaping, but I later discovered that sculpting was more effective for creating different type of hairstyles and objects.

This project has significantly developed my 3D modelling skills, time management, and self-directed learning. I now feel more equipped to tackle complex tasks and resolve issues independently, which I believe will be invaluable in future projects.

Conclusion

To sum up, this project has been a transformative and unforgettable experience, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally. I look forward to applying the skills and knowledge I’ve gained to my future works as well.
