Working on the DS CoLab Project on the Secunda etas mundi map of the HKUST Library has been a remarkable experience that deeply resonated with both my academic interests and creative passions. My role centered around researching and illustrating the mythical characters featured on this historical map. This opportunity allowed me to merge art, history, and technology in a meaningful way.
What made this project especially fulfilling was how it pushed me to grow both personally and technically. I had long been curious about how augmented reality could be incorporated into education and cultural preservation. It was exciting to take something old and beautiful and reimagine it in a new modern form.
My main task was to illustrate the mythical figures on the map who have roots in ancient mythology. I spent a lot of time researching the origins and symbolism behind each character. It required particular effort to piece together the scattered or conflicting information. It gave me a new appreciation of how much work goes into historical research.
Digitally, I worked with Procreate and Photoshop, ensuring each illustration displayed culturally and historically accurate details. Every technical challenge I encountered taught me something new, whether about digital layering, or problem-solving through design. I put particular attention to make sure I stay true to the original characters on the mood while showcasing my artistic freedom.

Another challenge was trying to ‘forget’ everything I know about drawing a realistically accurate human anatomy as these creatures often had a missing leg, or a longer neck, or an extra set of eyes. It was truly fascinating to see my artistic approach deepen, and my technical skills improve throughout the project.

The most valuable part of this project was working with my team. Working with a team of passionate and talented individuals brought a unique energy to the project. We shared feedback, bounced ideas off each other in a very energetic and positive working environment. I learned not only from the project itself, but also from the diverse perspectives and approaches of my teammates.
Seeing the completed map in its reimagined form fills me with pride. I believe we succeeded in honoring the past while incoorporating futuristic tools. This project strengthened my belief in the power of creative technology to tell stories that matter. I’m grateful for the opportunity, and more excited than ever to continue exploring how art can inspire connection, dialogue, and innovation.
