Cheers to Our Student Helpers: A Party, Awards, and Their Stories (Part 1)

Student helpers provide valuable assistance to the Library by supporting our staff behind the scenes and at various service points to keep everything running smoothly. Last week, we celebrated their efforts at the Student Helper Appreciation Party, with 25 students joining us. The highlight? The Outstanding Student Helper Awards ceremony, where 10 exceptional helpers were honored for their tireless devotion, remarkable talents, and passion to do more. The awardees received e-certificates and coupons as tokens of appreciation. Everyone enjoyed tasty refreshments and mingled with library staff in a relaxed atmosphere.

What makes these helpers stand out? Here’s what five of them had to say about their time with us.

Luke from Access Service

Managing access control has taught me vigilance and improved my attention to detail. Answering user inquiries enhanced my communication skills and highlighted the importance of patience and empathy. This role has significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth.

Ruby from Resource Management

I have learned a lot from this job. Through this experience, I now understand the behind-the-scenes operations of the library, such as how the library processes users’ hold requests and the various steps in preparing books for shelfing. I now have a deeper appreciation for the efforts to make books available.

Giann from University Archives and Special Collections

I have worked with the University Archives and Special Collections since my first year. I organize old books, documents, and help setup and monitor exhibits. Library colleagues gave me valuable opportunities to learn more about history, languages, and geography, subjects I would not normally approach as an Engineering student, expanding my knowledge and interests.

Karson from University Archives and Special Collections

My year as a UASC helper deepened my appreciation for preserving history. I shot a video for The Story of HKUST’s Birth exhibition and guided visitors during Information Day 2024. Handling artifacts taught me that archives aren’t just records—they’re shared memories that connect us to the past. Witnessing the team’s meticulous care for collections also showed me how small details safeguard cultural heritage. Working with the UASC team this past year has been an enriching journey, sharpened my storytelling and attention to detail, and strengthened my belief in preserving the past to inspire future communities. Thank you for this unforgettable opportunity!
