Researchers' Series
Data Cleaning 101: Using No-code Tools (2024-25 Spring)

Data cleaning is a crucial step in the research process, ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and reliability for analysis. This workshop introduces OpenRefine and Power Query, two powerful no-code tools that simplify data cleaning without programming. Through hands-on exercises, students will gain practical experience in data cleaning and wrangling. By mastering these tools, researchers can significantly enhance their data quality, leading to more reliable research outcomes.

After this workshop, students will be able to:

  • Identify common data problems and possible ways to address them
  • Use OpenRefine to standardize data formats, remove duplicates, and reconcile inconsistencies across large datasets
  • Use Power Query to merge multiple data sources, transform data structures, and automate repetitive cleaning tasks
  • Compare and choose the most appropriate tool based on the task requirements and data characteristics
