Researchers' Series
Web Scraping 101 (2024-25 Spring)
Students who have previously taken “Web Scraping for Non-technical Researchers (Module 1)” need not retake this workshop (credit will not be counted).
Web scraping is a useful technique for researchers, as it allows them to quickly and automatically extract data from websites for analysis, making their research process more efficient and repeatable. This 2-module workshop is designed for students without programming knowledge to pick the right tool for scraping content from the web. Module 1 – Using No-code Tools introduces the no-code approach to scraping, while Module 2 – Using Python and AI demonstrates how to use Python code to scrape content with the help of AI.
Module 1 will cover:
- Understand the basic concepts and principles of web scraping
- Identify available web scraping tools and their appropriate uses
- Use Power Query and Web Scraper to extract content of interest from the web
