International Open Access Week 2024 – October 21-27
Academic Publishing
Researchers' Series

October 21-27 will be International Open Access Week 2024. Worldwide, people and organizations dedicated to pursuing “Open Access” as a part of the Open Science agenda will celebrate open access and hold activities. This year’s theme continues 2023’s “Community over Commercialization”.

What does this slogan mean? It means that the common pursuit of human knowledge should be as open as possible for all of humanity. Especially, research and knowledge funded by governments worldwide should have their results available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, as a public good.

As UNESCO puts it:

“Open Access means free access to scientific information and unrestricted use of electronic data for everyone. With Open Access, expensive prices and copyrights will no longer be obstacles to the dissemination of knowledge. Everyone is free to add information, modify contents, translate texts into other languages, and disseminate an entire electronic publication.” (https://www.unesco.org/en/open-access)

How to Participate

To put us in the right frame of mind to start off, on October 14th, the Library will host a talk on Copyright and Creative Commons for Educators. Creative Commons licensing allows people to share articles, books, videos, etc., without a fee under circumstances decided by the creator/author.

Busy that day? No worries, the speaker has agreed to remote video capture, so people who cannot attend can still listen and learn. On

October 8th and 10th, the Library will offer the workshop “Open Access What Where How” to help researchers make informed decisions relating to open access publishing, as well as to clarify some common but confusing OA terms and practices.

On October 23rd and 25th, the Library will offer workshops on Data Management Planning (DMP). One aspect of Open Science also relates to research data sharing: how do you want to license your data for future use—via Creative Commons, or some other method?
