Paywall: a Documentary on Academic Publishing Market
Academic Publishing

It's still Open Access Week 2019 and how better to celebrate it than to watch a movie?

Paywall : The Business of Scholarship is a documentary that explains about the US$ 25 billion industry of academic scholarship, and how efforts towards Open Access are trying to change the model of how scientists and researchers in all disciplines publish and share their research results.

The movie website itself also links to a short video explaining what is Open Access

HKUST Library has been working to help promote open scholarship, having been a member of SPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) for 20 years. What does SPARC do?

"...works to enable the open sharing of research outputs and educational materials in order to democratize access to knowledge, accelerate discovery, and increase the return on our investment in research and education."

Among the resources it has created is an addendum that researchers can put on their copyright transfer agreements in order to retain more rights to share their work. You can find out more about that on the "Author Rights" Library guide.

Celebrate Open Access!
