Jerusalem, a city revered by Jews, Christians, and Muslims, has been depicted on legions of maps, probably earlier and more frequently than any other city. This talk will survey the maps of Jerusalem through time, from the 6th century Madaba Mosaic map, to the early accurate maps from the late 19th century. Some of the maps depicted a realistic view of Jerusalem but many others are imaginary images of Jerusalem of the Holy Scriptures. Therefore the maps serve as a mirror through which we can look at the development of Jerusalem on one hand and at the perceptions of the Holy City held by European scholars and map-makers on the other hand.The event is co-organized by the Library and Division of Social Science. Please show SID card on arrival for registration. Professor Rehav RubinProf. Rubin is a professor at the Department of Geography at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; he is currently the Elman Family Visiting Professor of Jewish and Israeli Studies in the Division of Social Science at HKUST. His main areas of research and teaching is the history of cartography and mapping of Jerusalem and the Holy Land; geographical aspects of pilgrimage and Holy Places; historical geography of Israel/Palestine, especially in late antiquity.

About the TalkFollowing the very successful book talk on his book "誰把爛泥扶上壁 – 你所不知的香港建築故事" in March 2017, this time Professor Fung will focus on some of his architectural projects mentioned in the book. He was an awardee of the Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 1990 and Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Designers in 2011. In 2008, he received the “Certificate of Commendation” from Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau and was appointed Justice of the Peace. Fung has also won five Hong Kong Institute of Architects Annual Awards and 50 major awards in visual arts, architecture and interior design. His paintings have been selected in China National Art Exhibition, Hong Kong Art Biennial and HKDA Asia Design Awards multiple times. After spending her early childhood in Vancouver, her family moved to  New York City, where she attended the United Nations International School.  She went on to study at Yale (B.A.) and then went  into banking; climbing the corporate ladder at Citi, and traveling around the world.  She also holds an EMBA from Fordham University.She met her husband while working in Sao Paulo, Brazil and they married in Manila shortly before they moved to Singapore, where she managed the Global Client business for Citi in Asia.  Marie Claire and her husband and three children now live in Hong Kong, where she works as Head of Visa Consulting for Hong Kong and Taiwan. Previously, she served as the Development Director at The Womens Foundation, a Hong Kong charity dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls.  

About the TalkDr. Wen will discuss his book, “The making of an economic superpower: unlocking China’s secret of rapid industrialization" (call number: HD3616.C63 W46 2016). This book argues that the generally accepted institutional theory of economic development is highly inadequate in explaining China’s astonishing economic growth, and only a radical reinterpretation of the history of the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the West can fully explain China’s growth miracle in the past 30 years. 座談會簡介文一教授認為當代主流經濟學理論，尤其是關於經濟發展的製度經濟學理論，無法解釋中國過去三十年的崛起。在這次座談會中，文一將討論其著作《偉大的中國工業革命: "發展政治經濟學"一般原理批判綱要》(索書號: HD3616.C63 W462 2016)及重新闡釋工業革命和西方崛起的歷史來解釋中國增長的奇蹟，以及為什麼中國的崛起是不可阻擋的。About the SpeakerDr. Wen Yi (PhD., University of Iowa, 1996) is currently a Senior Economist and Assistant Vice President at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management, and PBC School of Finance in China. He previously held academic positions at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Cornell University, Washington University in St. Louis, and served as inaugural CCB Chair Professor in the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University. His research interest is related to macroeconomics, monetary policy, economic growth and development. In 1978 he joined the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), in 1985 he graduated from Henan University majoring in Political Education, and in 1991 he received a degree from the Literature Department of the PLA Academy of Art. He began his writing career in 1979, and his novels include The Passing of Time, As Hard as Water, Lenin’s Kisses, Serve the People!, Dream of Ding Village, Odes and Hymns, The Four Books, and The Day the Sun Died. As one of contemporary China’s most controversial and influential authors, he has received more than twenty distinguished national and international literature prizes, including the First and Second Lu Xun Literature Prize, the Third Lao She Literature Prize, and the Hua Zhong World Chinese Literature Award. He was a finalist for the Prince of Asturias Literature Prize and the Prix Femina Literature Prize, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in both 2013 and 2016. In 2014 he was awarded with the Franz Kafka Literature Prize, and in 2016 his novel The Day the Sun Died won the Dream of the Red Chamber Literary Prize from Hong Kong. His works have been translated into more than twenty languages, including Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, French, English, German, Italian, Dutch, Hebrew, Spanish, and Serbian. Many of these translations have attracted attention and critical acclaim for the novels in their respective literary markets. There has been considerable dispute over his writing in China, but he has stood as a writer with deep conscience and great passion. In 2004, he quit the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. He is currently a professor at Renmin University in Beijing, and Sin Wai Kin Visiting Professor of Chinese Culture at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
