About this iTalkIn this talk, award-winning journalist and former CNN correspondent, Mike Chinoy will discuss the biography he has written about Kevin Boyle (1943-2010), one of the world’s great human rights lawyers. While he worked primarily in China and North Korea, he also reported on the Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1970s and 80s. It was during this time that he met Kevin Boyle. Chinoy is currently a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the University of Southern California’s US-China Institute and is based in Hong Kong. His books include China Live: People, Power, and Television Revolution (1999), Meltdown: The Inside Story of the North Korean Nuclear Crisis (2008), and The Last POW (2014). 

座談會簡介 / About the Talk 三位剛畢業的化學及生物工程學系同學在2020年春季的Product and Process Design 課程 project 中，經劉元帥教授指導和和科大校友創業家何寶琪女士協助下，成功研發和推出長效抗菌護手霜。這次講座會介紹化妝品的科學知識以及抗菌護手霜的研發。Three CBE students came up with the idea of creating a long-lasting antimicrobial hand cream in the Product and Process Design course in Spring 2020. With the tremendous support from Prof. Marshal Liu and alumna-entrepreneur Ms. Vanessa Ho Po-Ki, the idea came to fruition and the product was successfully commercialized.This talk will focus on the science and function of cosmetics and the development of antimicrobial hand creams. 登記報名: https://lbcube.ust.hk/ce/event/7790 講者簡介 / About the Speakers 劉元帥教授 (Professor Marshal Liu)Dr Marshal LIU is currently Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor of Engineering Education at Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering, and Associate Director of Center for Engineering Education Innovation, at HKUST.Being a teacher with passion, dedication and versatile teaching methods, Dr LIU has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Teaching Award in School of Engineering, and Common Core Teaching Excellence Award for the course Food Science and Technology. His research is focused on food processing, product design and development.Dr Liu is also committed to providing students with fulfilling and pleasant learning experience, to mentoring students for all-round growth and development. Dr Liu is interested in entrepreneurship and has worked closely with several alumni on the startups. One team won the President award in HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition for wastewater treatment in 2018. In 2020, he joined efforts with UG students and alumni to develop and launch the long-lasting antimicrobial hand cream, in response to the battle with infectious diseases. Committed to helping refugees and minority rights, in 2014 he travelled to the United Nations in Geneva to speak about the issues of segregated schools.He has been featured in numerous documentaries, news articles, TV programs. He has received The Secretary for Home Affairs Commendation awarded in recognition of his dedicated service and outstanding contributions to the enhancement of racial harmony and integration to Hong Kong. Recently been selected as 2019 JCI Top Outstanding young persons and also 2019 Cathay Pacific’s Change Makers award and his beloved football team Manchester United recognized him as one of 7 Global heroes.He has been with Christian Action’s Centre for refugees for 11 years as a social worker and now assistant manager.

About the Talk  - Powerpoint slidesDaoism and Environmental Philosophy: Nourishing Life (Register here)The early Daoist text the Daodejing is popularly and anachronistically thought to speak in direct ways to ecology and the environment. Such prevalent ways of reading the text persist even as they are frequently criticized in the Sinological and Daoist scholarly community. While the Daodejing was composed across different historical contexts with diverse purposes in mind, the text continues to speak to questions of how to individually and socially live and interact with human and inhuman life and the natural world.In discussing my new book Daoism and Environmental Philosophy: Nourishing Life, I reexamine the extent to which the Daodejing and other early Daoist texts can be suggestive for addressing the contemporary environmental crisis. I consider whether and how early Daoist conceptions and practices of emptying (xu 虛), stilling (jing 靜), and making plain (su 素), responsive attunement (wuwei 無為), and nourishing life (yangsheng 養生 ) can be interpreted and reimagined in critical ecological models that indicate different more nurturing ways of dwelling and becoming with our environment and the myriad things (wanwu 萬物), in their own respective tendencies and ways of becoming (ziran 自然). Notes: (i)HLTH 1010 - HKUST students may attain 1.5 hours credit for the Healthy Lifestyle Course after attending the talk. Nelson is Associate Professor of Humanities at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, having joined in 2014. He received his PhD from Emory University. His areas of teaching and research include modern European, East Asian, and intercultural/comparative philosophy and religion. He is particularly interested in questions of communication, interpretation, and social interaction (hermeneutics and ethics). His other book, Chinese and Buddhist Philosophy in Early Twentieth-Century German Thought, was published in 2017 and he has published over seventy articles and book chapters on Chinese, German, and Jewish philosophy.
