About the TalkRoy Delbyck is a major collector of printed materials on China and Hong Kong, largely from the first half of the 20th century. His collection comprises books, maps, photographs, letters, diaries, posters, postcards, directories, and other ephemera. It continues to grow, daily!Roy will talk about what he collects, he will also speak on why he collects, how his collecting interests have changed over time while exploring the nature of collecting, and how private collectors fill in the gaps, often going where institutions can’t.About the SpeakerWhen not collecting, Roy Delbyck is a US customs and trade lawyer with his own firm. He has resided in Hong Kong for many years. He is a trustee of the Museum of Chinese in America based in New York City.Roy has spoken on collecting and his collections at the Royal Asiatic Society, The University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong and the Yale Club of Hong Kong. About the Talk:Discussion of demography traditionally has focused on the consequences of population growth. In the talk, Prof Gietel-Basten will share his insights on how our understanding of demographics can influence politics and populations. He will also suggest how humans can take greater ownership of the future by a better understanding of the role demography has played in the past.You can register at Library Event Registration HLTH1010 HKUST students may attain 1.0 hour credit for the Healthy Lifestyle Course after attending the seminar.About the SpeakerProf Stuart Gietel-Basten is Associate Director of the Leadership and Public Policy Executive Education Program, and an Associate Professor of Department of Social Science and Institute for Public Policy at HKUST.His research covers the links between population and policy, with a regional focus on Asia. He is especially interested in the emergence of low fertility across the region, and the consequences of this in terms of population ageing and growth. He has been published in a number of major journals in demography and other social science subjects.  Why Demography matters (co-written with Danny Dorling) is his first book. He is also a regular contributor to the South China Morning Post and the China Daily.He received his education at the University of Cambridge, with a PhD in historical demography. Before coming to HKUST, he was an Associate Professor of Social Policy at the University of Oxford. He has also been an adviser in Population and Development at the UK Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology and a Research Scholar at the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis in Austria.

座談會簡介現今互聯網世界資訊氾濫，內容是真是假？很多人不再理會，於是造就不少錯誤訊息廣泛流傳，情況越來越嚴重。近年運動熱潮的興起，不少人把信以為真的訊息在網上與人分享，當中有些資訊更是錯誤的，以訛傳訛，越傳越錯，對社會容易造成負面影響。雷雄德博士將在是次座談會上為我們拆解運動的謬誤，提供一些運動冷知識，讓大家能夠更了解運動的科學原理。既可提升運動表現，享受運動樂趣的同時，也有助減低受傷的風險。《請問雷博士！運動科學是與非》是雷博士於2017年出版的作品。此書將於座談會即場發售，歡迎向作者索取親筆簽名。出席此座談會的科大同學可獲HLTH1010課程中"Activities"單元的"Wellness and Personal Enrichment"1小時學習時數。同學須於入場及離場時出示學生證以作記錄。名額有限，歡迎校外人士參加，請各位報名留座。如有查詢，請聯絡Ms. Celia Cheung (lbcelia@ust.hk)。講者簡介雷雄德博士畢業於美國麻省春田大學，考獲理碩士及體育博士學位，主修體育及運動科學。現職香港浸會大學體育學系副教授，兼任浸會大學許士芬博士體康研究中心副主任，及「亞洲體康學報」編輯。「運動與健康」和「學童體質」是雷博士的主要研究領域，曾撰寫八十多份學術文章及研究報告，並於國際學術會議上發表；社區服務方面，現兼任香港運動醫學及科學學會會長、香港警察訓練學院名譽顧問、小童群益會團隊挑戰賽主委、香港電台顧問團委員等；先後為明報、經濟日報、蘋果日報及星島日報撰寫專欄文章；連續於2002-2013年度獲得香港教練培訓委員會「優質教學獎」；每星期定期為香港電台主持體育及健康節目。

座談會簡介在近代東西和中日文化交流中, 三種珍籍曾有過不凡的經歷。在上海的倫敦佈道會傳教士慕維廉編纂的《地理全志》(1853-54)被日本幕府外交官岩瀨忠震所珍重並改編為易於檢索的《瀛環表》; 日本史學家星野恆先於中國人編成的《明清八家文》(1880)得到了應邀訪日的香港名士王韜的詳細評點; 1919年內藤湖南依據從上海新購入的孫廷翰舊藏《鈔本章學誠遺書》首先撰寫了章氏年譜, 給北京大學的胡適和清華大學的姚名達以極大刺激，二人隨之撰寫並增補了自己的章氏年譜。這三種珍籍經過講者的考證和推薦分別由日本関西大學出版部, 北京中華書局和台湾大學人文社会高等研究院影印出版。座談會將由香港科技大學圖書館和香港科技大學人文學部聯合主辦。名額有限，歡迎校外人士參加，請各位報名留座。如有查詢，請聯络Ms. Alice Ho (852) 2358-6707 / lbalice@ust.hk.About the SpeakerBorn and raised in Shanghai, De-min Tao has been a book lover since his boyhood. He had a hobby to roam about new and second-hand bookstores on Sichuan Road and Nanjing Road to find books and dictionaries he liked. But the “Proletarian Cultural Revolution” of 1966-76 disturbed his dream to read valuable books extensively to enrich himself while young. After the disastrous time, he was fortunate to be able to get a normal education and earn his MA from Fudan University and Ph.D. from Osaka University, and taught at Bridgewater State College of Massachusetts in early 1990s after finishing postdoctoral research at Princeton’s East Asian Department and Harvards Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies. During his teaching career at Kansai University (founded 1886) since 1996, he served as director of Institute for Cultural Interaction Studies at Kansai University (2007-12), a government-sponsored G-COE (Global Center of Excellence) program, and as the founding president of International Society for Cultural Interaction in East Asia (2009-10), whose 10th annual meeting is going to be held at City University of Hong Kong on 12th and 13th of May.Out of his own expectation, he became now an author and editor of 50 books (including coauthored and coedited ones), such as Cultural Interaction Studies in East Asia: New Methods and Perspectives; Transpacific Relations in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries: Religion, Commerce, and Culture; The Global Lincoln; The World Expositions and the East Asian Participation 1851-2010; The Collected Works of Samuel Wells Williams; Naito Konan’s Collection of Calligraphic and Pictorial Works of the Late Qing Celebrities; Neo-Confucianism and East Asia in Early Modern and Modern Eras, and so forth.For details of some of his works, please refer to his pages on Amazon China and Amzaon Japan. 講者簡介生在上海長在上海的陶德民，自小就是一個讀書愛好者。他喜歡閒逛離家不遠的四川路和南京路上的新書店和舊書店，買他想要的圖書和辭典。可是，1966年開始的“無產階級文化大革命”，使他趁著年輕多讀好書來充實自己的夢想無法成真。所幸的是，動亂結束后他有機會接受師範教育，並在復旦大學獲得碩士，在日本大阪大學獲得博士學位。1990年代前期，在普林斯頓大學東亞系和哈佛大學賴肖爾日本研究所完成博士後研究工作后，他在麻省州立橋水學院執教四年。從1996年迄今，他在關西大學任教已有二十餘年，其間2007年至2012年擔任該校東亞文化交涉學教育研究中心主任，該中心是日本文部科學省重點資助的全球化卓越中心計劃項目。他也是2009年成立的國際東亞文化交涉學會的創會會長，該學會的第十屆年會將於今年5月12、13日在香港城市大學舉行。他自己也沒有想到，經過多年努力，現在已經成為50本書（包括合著和合編的在內）的作者和編者。這些著作包括: Cultural Interaction Studies in East Asia: New Methods and Perspectives; Transpacific Relations in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries: Religion, Commerce, and Culture;The Global Lincoln; 《世博會和東亞的參與》，《衛三畏文集》，《內藤湖南と清人書畫》及《朱子學と近世近代の東アジア》……等等。關於他的部分編著，可以從亞馬遜的中文和日文網頁上了解詳情。
