Stepping into the World of 2084

Stepping into the World of 2084

In this talk, artist Michelle Fung shares research and creative processes behind her ongoing worldbuilding project 2084, a fictional futuristic bizarre future in 58 years. Since 2015, she has worked on Contradictoria and Northlandia, two of the five imaginary countries (G5). While Contradictoria presents an ecotopian/dytpian floating artist colony made with air pollution, Northlandia features an arctic country where the Ice Queen, a polar bear ice sculpture, frantically protects her country from the melting glaciers and the invading G4 countries.

A highlight of the afternoon is a rare screening of Michelle’s last hand-painted animation Polluta (27:30, 2023). Through the perspectives of Mrs. Elisa Riff, a deadpan TV host, and Miss Papagandria, a flamboyant journalist, we meet various artists (based on my real artist friends) and see various features of Polluta. At the end of the film, select artist characters are discontent with the “perfect” ecotopia and decide to take the matter into their own hands.
