座談會簡介《一八五八: 風起雲湧》是甄子明的第二部歷史小說。2016年甄子明亦曾在科大圖書館分享他的第一本歷史小說 －《一八四九：日出日落》。小說故事發生在1852至1859年，第一次鴉片戰爭已過去了十多年，中國成功解決了洋人的糾纏，正全力應付心腹大患：太平天國。英國人以為《南京條約》會令中國大開貿易之門，結果完全失望。他們有什麼辦法？正當中英夾纏不清時，人類文明卻在飛躍發展。英法有達爾文、馬克思、狄更斯、雨果、莫奈等曠世奇才，中國也有洪仁玕、容閎等首批現代化先烈，這些人對中國、對世界有什麼影響？甄子明將於講座中為大家剖析:第二次鴉片戰爭到底是為了什麼？鴉片？當時世界是怎麼樣的？為什麼中國與英國要打仗？第二次鴉片戰爭與中國的現代化有何關係？《一八五八: 風起雲湧》將於座談會即場發售，歡迎在演講後向作者索取親筆簽名。出席此活動的同學可獲HLTH1010課程中”Activities”單元的”Wellness and Personal Enrichment” 1小時學習時數。 同學須於入場及離場時出示學生證以作記錄。名額有限，請報名留座。講者簡介甄子明在香港出生，在香港和英國受教育。他是香港大學工學士、工管碩士、英國倫敦經濟學院經濟學碩士，是專業工程師，從事香港和國內的房地產業務。甄子明父親是六十年代的武俠小說作家高峰，所以他幼承庭訓，自小就對中國文學、文化和歷史有濃厚興趣。由於身在香港和英國，他亦有機會培養世界視野。除了從書本上認識中國和世界歷史以外，他在中國大陸工作了十多年，所以對中國、英國、和作為中英文化橋樑的香港，都有比較深刻的認識。他接觸過各個地方的不同階層，並在九十年代成為中國一家國企的房地產總經理，是第一個香港人擔任此職務，亦因此成為第一代香港回國內參與房地產建設的人。

座談會簡介在近代東西和中日文化交流中, 三種珍籍曾有過不凡的經歷。在上海的倫敦佈道會傳教士慕維廉編纂的《地理全志》(1853-54)被日本幕府外交官岩瀨忠震所珍重並改編為易於檢索的《瀛環表》; 日本史學家星野恆先於中國人編成的《明清八家文》(1880)得到了應邀訪日的香港名士王韜的詳細評點; 1919年內藤湖南依據從上海新購入的孫廷翰舊藏《鈔本章學誠遺書》首先撰寫了章氏年譜, 給北京大學的胡適和清華大學的姚名達以極大刺激，二人隨之撰寫並增補了自己的章氏年譜。這三種珍籍經過講者的考證和推薦分別由日本関西大學出版部, 北京中華書局和台湾大學人文社会高等研究院影印出版。座談會將由香港科技大學圖書館和香港科技大學人文學部聯合主辦。名額有限，歡迎校外人士參加，請各位報名留座。如有查詢，請聯络Ms. Alice Ho (852) 2358-6707 / lbalice@ust.hk.About the SpeakerBorn and raised in Shanghai, De-min Tao has been a book lover since his boyhood. He had a hobby to roam about new and second-hand bookstores on Sichuan Road and Nanjing Road to find books and dictionaries he liked. But the “Proletarian Cultural Revolution” of 1966-76 disturbed his dream to read valuable books extensively to enrich himself while young. After the disastrous time, he was fortunate to be able to get a normal education and earn his MA from Fudan University and Ph.D. from Osaka University, and taught at Bridgewater State College of Massachusetts in early 1990s after finishing postdoctoral research at Princeton’s East Asian Department and Harvards Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies. During his teaching career at Kansai University (founded 1886) since 1996, he served as director of Institute for Cultural Interaction Studies at Kansai University (2007-12), a government-sponsored G-COE (Global Center of Excellence) program, and as the founding president of International Society for Cultural Interaction in East Asia (2009-10), whose 10th annual meeting is going to be held at City University of Hong Kong on 12th and 13th of May.Out of his own expectation, he became now an author and editor of 50 books (including coauthored and coedited ones), such as Cultural Interaction Studies in East Asia: New Methods and Perspectives; Transpacific Relations in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries: Religion, Commerce, and Culture; The Global Lincoln; The World Expositions and the East Asian Participation 1851-2010; The Collected Works of Samuel Wells Williams; Naito Konan’s Collection of Calligraphic and Pictorial Works of the Late Qing Celebrities; Neo-Confucianism and East Asia in Early Modern and Modern Eras, and so forth.For details of some of his works, please refer to his pages on Amazon China and Amzaon Japan. 講者簡介生在上海長在上海的陶德民，自小就是一個讀書愛好者。他喜歡閒逛離家不遠的四川路和南京路上的新書店和舊書店，買他想要的圖書和辭典。可是，1966年開始的“無產階級文化大革命”，使他趁著年輕多讀好書來充實自己的夢想無法成真。所幸的是，動亂結束后他有機會接受師範教育，並在復旦大學獲得碩士，在日本大阪大學獲得博士學位。1990年代前期，在普林斯頓大學東亞系和哈佛大學賴肖爾日本研究所完成博士後研究工作后，他在麻省州立橋水學院執教四年。從1996年迄今，他在關西大學任教已有二十餘年，其間2007年至2012年擔任該校東亞文化交涉學教育研究中心主任，該中心是日本文部科學省重點資助的全球化卓越中心計劃項目。他也是2009年成立的國際東亞文化交涉學會的創會會長，該學會的第十屆年會將於今年5月12、13日在香港城市大學舉行。他自己也沒有想到，經過多年努力，現在已經成為50本書（包括合著和合編的在內）的作者和編者。這些著作包括: Cultural Interaction Studies in East Asia: New Methods and Perspectives; Transpacific Relations in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries: Religion, Commerce, and Culture;The Global Lincoln; 《世博會和東亞的參與》，《衛三畏文集》，《內藤湖南と清人書畫》及《朱子學と近世近代の東アジア》……等等。關於他的部分編著，可以從亞馬遜的中文和日文網頁上了解詳情。

About the TalkAfter Christopher Columbus opened up sea routes between the Old Word and the New, the world’s food supply was transformed, with major crops moving between continents. Several millennia earlier, an equally radical transformation opened up land routes across the Old World, and major crops moved between eastern and western Eurasia. However, this earlier episode of food globalization has only recently come to light, thanks to novel possibilities of scientific archaeology.In this seminar talk, the results of those novel methods, and the various crop movements of the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC are explained. Professor Jones will go on to consider some key questions about those movements: first of all, how they happened and what were the corresponding movements of people; secondly, what were consequences of those movements, for the different societies emerging in different regions of the Old World.Remarks: For interested parties, please register at Library Event Registration
HLTH1010 HKUST students may attain 1.5 hour credit for the Healthy Lifestyle Course after attending the seminar.About the SpeakerProfessor Martin Jones is the first George Pitt-Rivers Professor of archaeological Science at the University of Cambridge, Vice-Master of Darwin College, Cambridge, and Chairman of Trustees at the Needham Research Institute and a world renowned archaeologist. For forty years he has published reports of his archaeobotanical research, into the nature and development of agriculture in different parts of the world. In the 1990s, his work expanded from archaeobotany to embrace the novel field of archaeogenetics, subsequently engaging with stable isotope palaeodietary studies. His research group has played a lead role in combining these three methodological strands to investigate the human food quest in the past, and address its implications for present and future foodways. 
 

About the TalkThe Mongol invasion in the thirteenth century marked a new phase in the development of Islamic art. Trans-Eurasian exchanges of goods, people and ideas were encouraged on a large scale under the auspices of the Pax Mongolica. With the fascination of portable objects brought from China and Central Asia, a distinctive, hitherto unknown style - Islamic chinoiserie - was born in the art of Iran.This illustrated lecture offers a fascinating glimpse into the artistic interaction between Iran and China under the Mongols. By using rich visual materials from various media of decorative and pictorial arts - textiles, ceramics, metalwork and manuscript painting - it demonstrates the process of adoption and adaptation of Chinese themes in the art of Mongol-ruled Iran. The observation of this unique artistic phenomenon serves to promote the understanding of the artistic diversity of Islamic art in the Middle Ages.Co-organized by the HKUST Center for Education Innovation, the HKUST Center for the Arts and the HKUST Library, this event is one of the "Silk Road" Talks of the HKUST Arts Festival 2018.This talk is open to the public. She is the author and editor of numerous publications, including Islamic Chinoiserie (2009; paperback, 2018; Chinese edition, forthcoming); The Shaping of Persian Art (2013); Arthur Upham Pope and A New Survey of Persian Art (2016); and Persian Art: Image-making in Eurasia (2018). She has curated several exhibitions, including a major loan exhibition of Persian art at the Liang Yi Museum, entitled "The Blue Road: Mastercrafts from Persia" (20 March - 24 June 2018). 
 

座談會簡介過了馬六甲海峽，鄭和所到的西洋，究竟是今天甚麼地方？這些地方有甚麼重要性，現在又是甚麼樣子？在茫茫大海上，鄭和船隊使用的又是甚麼地圖和定位技術？由唐宋時海上絲路趨於興盛，到鄭和下西洋的時代，中國航海者留下不少文字，讓我們可以窺見當時中國人對東起孟加拉灣西達非洲東岸的大海洋，有多少認識。在旅行自由又容易的今天，加上互聯網無遠弗屆，跟講者來一次實地查探及書上追蹤，為自己打開一片廣濶的海洋世界。這次座談會是香港科技大學藝術節2018 “絲路講座” 系列的其中一講，由科大教育創新中心、科大藝術中心及科大圖書館合辦。名額有限，歡迎校外人士參加，請報名留座。

About the SpeakerFrom 1989 to 2014, Ms. Bonino worked in the Italian Department of China Radio International, hosting a program which received the prestigious China News Award in 2012. She is currently teaching Broadcasting at the Institute of Science of Communications at Wenzhou Business College, Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. Gabriella Bonino is also a published author. About the Talk Dr. ZHU has been reading for many years about the history and culture of Jewish people. It is an interest that he developed while living in Canada and first meeting and getting to know Jewish people. He likes to ponder what he sees as similarities and differences between Jewish and Chinese cultures, especially in regard to family values, educational achievement, preserving traditions, and civic responsibility (repairing the world).Among the books he discussed were:The Jewish Century by Yuri SlezkineJewish literacy : the most important things to know about the Jewish religion, its people, and its history by Joseph TelushkinEmpires of the Word by Nicholas Ostler  About the SpeakerDr. Zhu Lijing brings an interesting mixture of education and career background to both his work and his reading. Born and reared in Mainland China, he studied International Relations at Beijing University (1978-80) before moving overseas in 1980 and studying American History at Carleton University and University of London. Finding a home-from-home in Canada, he settled in at the University of Western Ontario, where he received his B.A. and M.A., in addition to his PhD in Economics (1991). After teaching economics at University of Windsor, he returned to Asia, where he taught economics for several years at HKUST, the National University of Singapore, and at HKU.For the past 10 years, Dr. Zhu has worked in an administrative capacity at HKUST: first recruiting non-local UG students and then providing advice and support to both PG and UG students from the Mainland. Since 2005, Dr. Zhu has served as Chairman, Vice Chairman (Internal Affairs), and EXCO Member of the HKUST Staff Association; was a a Member of HKUST Court for six years (2005-2011) and as a member of the HKUST Council (2009-2012). He is currently an Associate Director for Student Life in the Student Affairs Office (SAO).Experiencing different cultures and sub-cultures in a variety of social, institutional, and professional contexts has sparked Dr. Zhus interest in reading about them on his own.
