In March and April 2015, the Library conducted a survey of HKUST faculty on library research support services. This was a joint survey involving libraries at 4 UGC-funded institutions, using the Ithaka Faculty Survey Series.
A total of 107 faculty members started the survey, 78 of them completed. We express sincere gratitude to the respondents. A glimpse of their demographic profile follows (76 respondents filled in the demographic information):
Professor | Associate Professor | Assistant Professor | Adjunct Professor | Lecturer / Senior Lecturer | Other | Total | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Arts and Humanities | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
Business | 11 | 4 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 22 |
Engineering | 8 | 6 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 15 |
Science | 8 | 7 | 4 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 21 |
Social Science | 2 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 4 | 2 | 11 |

Results highlights
The survey consisted of 5 sections. It gathered information from HKUST researchers about a range of issues, covering their preferences on information use, practices on managing and disseminating research output, expectation on support services, and perception of library’s role in research support.
The respondents indicate a high dependence on the Library for their research. To a majority of them, the Library’s collection is the most important information source. HKUST researchers appear to have diverse attitudes on various scholarly communication issues, such as research data management and open access.
Find the summary of the survey responses by following the 5 sections:
- Discovery of research and teaching material
- Access to scholarly material
- Data preservation and management
- Scholarly communication practices
- The role of library
