The HKUST Library and Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management jointly present

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and The China Academy of Art (CAA) collaborated on a unique Design Thinking course for a fifth successive occasion in June this year. The objectives of the course were primarily to bring together the disciplines of art and technology, and to foster cross-disciplinary expertise in innovative product design.

The teaching team comprised both faculty and technical specialists from the Departments of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management (IELM) and Computer Science Engineering (CSE) at HKUST, and the School of Design and School of Intermedia Art from CAA. The academic background of both UG and PG students who attended this exciting and original course was extremely diverse, bringing expertise and knowledge from many various disciplines.

The course duration was over a period of 3.5 weeks at both HKUST and CAA campuses; final projects are presented and exhibited at the HKUST Lee Shau Kee Library. These novel creations are the endeavor of teams of students from the two universities showcasing technology, empathy and emotion.

• Very nice work! Appreciate their creativity and hard work! But the products can be more practical. I can’t understand the use of some products in real life.

• There’s so much to take in that I can only comment on the exhibit generally and as a whole. I’ve been taught that the design process and design itself is synonymous with problem solving and from what I can gather, most of the projects are geared towards that. Whether all of them are practical and/or user friendly, however, is another story. I’d like to comment that the majority of the projects and prototypes are designed with a single function in mind and as a result, seem limited in their scope. Nevertheless, everything was mostly well-designed and I can only imagine the amount of work it took to make these prototypes come to life.
• Some good idea here! But, prototypes don’t work for more them some of them. Also, the descriptions could be better – couldn’t understand for some.
• I love the library!! People should study in school like UST.

• He is similar as PolyU Annual Design Show which is the creative as it. But it is so far from the other districts that can attract only few people to attend this show. By the way, it is very nice show.
