Dr Sze Chi Ching, a Justice of the Peace in Hong Kong, is known to the art world by various scholarly aliases. From his early childhood days, he has been steeped in the cultural arts. With his mother as his first teacher, but without access to material supplies, Dr Sze began a life-long pursuit of the art of calligraphy. His childhood deprivations were such that he was forced to practice his art by using water on brick surfaces in his early hardscrabble days. He studied and emulated the styles of the grandmasters down the centuries, learning formal training in calligraphy at the knee of Prof Fung Hong Hau. From these myriad sources of influence, he shaped his own unique style. His orthographic style has a grandeur that is pleasingly balanced. His cursive style has an unbridled freedom all its own. Today, he is a recognized master in the writing of the classical couplets.

Dr Sze is a prolific writer. His published works include books on calligraphy, among them”The Yin and Yang of Calligraphy”, “Chi Ching’s Ink Sensibilities”, “The Art of Ink According to Chi Ching” and “A Scholar’s Ink by Chi Ching”. As for long scrolls in the cursive style, they include”Rhapsody of the Later Red Cliff”, “Rhapsody of the Early Red Cliff”. His essay collection is called”Snow Fragrance”. His poetic writings were published under the title of “Snow Fragrance Poetry”, while his political writings were known as”Chi Ching’s Embryonic Views”. Many of Dr Sze’s calligraphic works have been exhibited throughout Greater China, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Fuzhou, and Xiamen.

Dr Sze’s interests extend beyond the merely literary. In fact, he has earned the sobriquet as “The Modern Confucian Businessman”, wearing many hats in different spheres of endeavor. His public posts include the Vice-chairmanship of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, Vice-chairmanship of the Committee for Learning and Cultural and Historical Data of the Committee of the People’s Political Consultative Conference, Vice-chairmanship of the China Civilian Chamber of Commerce, Chairmanship of the Board of Directors of Hang Tung Resources Holding Ltd., Chairmanship of the Kuang Da Property Development Ltd., as well as countless headships, honorary chairmanships, and permanent honorary chairmanships of notable organizations and agencies.
