Growing up, I was surrounded by remarkable women —my mother, my teachers, and later my colleagues, I have always been nurtured and inspired by these “wonder women”, whose intelligence and resilience became the guiding lights along my path. Over time, that experience led me to a broader question: can we meaningfully capture and measure the contributions made by women in academia？

As the holiday season approaches, we hope to use a unique way to celebrate the incredible research achievements of HKUST in 2024 - turning our collective outputs into a festive Christmas tree!

Exploring the research landscape of an institution has often meant turning to traditional academic databases like Web of Science or Scopus for publication information. However, open data is changing how we understand research.

In 2018, a pressing issue emerged at the campus canteen: food waste. With trays piling up with uneaten food, the question loomed: "With all the technology available to us, can we curb food waste on campus?"

The value of research data can go way beyond the project for which it is created. Well-managed data can optimize it’s re-usability and research reproducibility; it also helps researchers to demonstrate good research practice and integrity.

Environment data poses specific challenges to researchers in data management. Networked sensors collect voluminous data that require systematic planning in workflow, storage and dissemination. Prof. NING Zhi (ENVR) illustrated good data practices with environment big data.

In an online seminar, Prof. Cameron Campbell used datasets of 3 projects to illustrate research data management practices. His advises are not only applicable for historical data, but also valuable for researchers in many disciplines.
