Introduction
The Jiazi Society is a locally registered non-profit arts organization. For the past three decades, its members have come together to research and study the art of Chinese calligraphy assiduously. Society members have exhibited at the Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial (the highest grade of local official exhibition) and many winners were Society members. Members have gone on repeated exchanges with Mainland provincial calligraphy groups, and have also been invited to Japan, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom for exhibition and exchanges.
In recent years, the Society’s works have mostly taken as their theme Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist philosophy. This promotes both the art of Chinese calligraphy and our excellent traditional heritage, thought, and culture at once: a commendable and venerable intention!
Our Library has staged several exhibitions of Chinese calligraphy before, the most recent one in 2009 (five years ago). We are honored to exhibit the works of the Jiazi Society, to organize a talk and demonstration, and guided tours of exhibits by members of the Society. Through these, we hope HKUST students, faculty, and staff will come to appreciate today’s calligraphy from Hong Kong, and enhance their interest in and appreciation of Chinese calligraphy as a whole.
