A Journey to Excellence - An Exhibition of the University Archives Collection

Introduction

With the opening of the Fok Ying Tung Graduate School in Nansha as one of the foremost incubators for scientific research and technological innovation in China, and the establishment of the Institute for Advanced Study destined to be one of the world’s leading intellectual centers, HKUST is ready for another major leap in research capability that may exert significant world impact. This is a good time for us to look back through the University Archives collection on how a rocky barracks site has evolved into a picturesque world class university in less than 20 years.

This exhibition presents, not only a handsome display that captures the distinctive academic and research achievements of the University and our thriving campus life, but also a wide range of early documents and artifacts. These include the first handwritten ledger of the University, early correspondences among the offices, the contents of the Time Capsule, awards won by various schools and offices, numerous opening souvenirs and the debut issues of the University’s publications.

We deeply appreciate the concerted financial and professional support of the Office of University Development and Public Affairs and the Publishing Technology Center in organizing this event. While most of the display originates from the University Archives collection, we are grateful that many individuals and offices loan us their precious mementos. Our special thanks are extended to Professor Chia-Wei Woo who has kindly contributed many of his personal documents to further enrich the exhibition.
