As autumn unfolds and the days grow shorter, it’s the perfect time to enjoy some fantastic science fiction. Sci-fi has gained immense popularity among recent generations, exploring themes like robotics, space exploration, time travel, and parallel universes—topics that resonate across various media. A new selection of best-selling sci-fi titles including eBooks and physical items is now on display near the G/F Leisure Reading Zone. Liu Cixin has emerged as a prominent figure in contemporary science fiction, with his novels The Three-Body Problem(三体) and The Wandering Earth(流浪地球) adapted into movies and television dramas. Mr. Liu’s works, from short stories to novels, are featured in this Sci-fi display. In addition to Liu Cixin's works, you will discover other timeless classics by H.G. Wells, such as The Time Machine and The Invisible Man, alongside with the classic series by Hong Kong novelist Ni Kuang such as Legend of Wesley(衛斯理傳奇之搜靈·盡頭). This diverse selection appeals to all sci-fi lovers, whether you’re an experienced reader or just starting to explore the genre. Science fiction is not only entertaining but also stimulates critical thinking about our world and its future.

Whether you are looking for a good scare or a creepy vibe for a cozy movie night, we have got you covered. From classic thrillers like The Shining to modern favorites like Get Out and Longlegs, the display offers something for every horror fan. Don’t miss our selection of Asian titles, such as the iconic 呪怨  (Ju-on) and the must-see Korean zombie flick 부산행 (Train to Busan). If you want some laughs mixed with chills, カメラを止めるな! (One Cut of the Dead) is a must-watch! We are also featuring 5 streaming films, including Smile 2 and Summer of 84. What's Up on the Ground Floor this September? You may have noticed something unusual just inside the G/F gates of the Library. What is it? A display of a digital humanities project for you to interact (play) with. What's the story? In spring semester 2025, 5 UG students worked with library staff as one of the DS CoLab projects to bring a 520 year-old map from the Library's collection to life. They used augmented reality (AR) technology to create an engaging and interactive visual way to explore the cultures and histories that went into the creation of "Secunda etas mundi", The Second Stage of the World, from Hartmann Schedel's Nuremberg Chronicle (1493).  This map is a fascinating piece from the library’s Special Collections. It shows “The Second Age of the World” (out of 6), the stage between Noah’s Flood and the birth of Abraham. These ages were a periodization of world history (common in Christian Europe for about 1,000 years), first formulated by the North African Christian theologian, Augustine of Hippo (354-430 CE). A remarkable example of late medieval cartography, it combines knowledge from the Greek geographer Claudius Ptolemy with visual references from religion and mythology from Europe and the lands surrounding the Mediterranean.

For crime dramas enthusiasts, the Infernal Affairs I , II, III; (無間道I, II, III 終極無間) directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak is a must-see. Wong Kar-wai’s masterpieces, In the Mood for Love (花樣年華) and Chungking Express (重慶森林), highlight his distinctive artistic vision. March 8th will be International Women’s Day (IWD)! Women’s day has been celebrated in various forms by socialist and communist groups and countries for over 100 years. It became a more widespread celebration of women’s achievements and aspirations when the United Nations adopted and promoted International Women’s Day.     Here at HKUST, the Library has joined the broader HKUST celebrations with an IWD 2025 Book Display. It highlights women’s achievements and work across the ages in many areas: science, technology, the arts, music, and literature, as well as in politics and labor. Celebrate IWD by taking something to read, to listen to, or to watch. The Semester is Ending! In the midst of all the end-of-semester work, we sometimes need to relax with a good read or interesting video. Or, we like to imagine or even plan our relaxation and fun for after we've sat our last exam in December, or handed in the last section of grades (if we're a teacher or TA). Science & Science Fiction – Fuel for the Imagination For centuries, science and science fiction have been linked: inspiring happy dreams, terrifying nightmares, or thought experiments in between. Both explore and extrapolate from past and present into the future. Both fuel our imaginations. To make it easier for HKUST people to “fuel up” from now until the end of January 2025, library staff have made a Science & Science Fiction Collection Highlights. It has books and videos on interesting scientific topics and classic and recent science fiction, in both English and Chinese. The physical display of some of the print books and DVDs is near the Service Desk on the G/F. If the title you want isn’t on the table, ask staff for it at the Service Desk.
