On June 4, 2026, the University held the Long Service Award Presentation Ceremony 2025 to recognize employees for their 20, 30, or 35 years of dedicated service. And we were especially proud to honor ten of our remarkable Library colleagues who have completed 30 or 35 years of full-time service.

As a student, the Library might feel like just another study space—quiet corners, comfy chairs, bright lights, and endless books. But look a little closer: HKUST Library has been quietly caring for the planet for decades, through small, practical choices made every day.

Among the many research guides available, Umberto Eco's How to Write a Thesis (originally published in Italian in 1977, English translation 2015) remains remarkably relevant. When I first encountered this book, I was struck by how clearly it addresses real research challenges. Although Eco’s examples lean toward the humanities and social sciences, and some of his preferred tools—like index cards—now feel dated, the core principles transcend both discipline and time. His advice on developing a work plan, reading thoroughly, documenting sources carefully, cultivating originality, and structuring clear arguments still resonates today. Over the years, in my own research and when talking about literature searching, I have returned to Eco's insights again and again.

In 2025, 16 Library colleagues volunteered their time and skills to support the wider community, demonstrating the Library’s strong commitment to service and social responsibility. Their efforts were recognised at the HKUST Impact Makers Program Appreciation Ceremony 2026, where the Library received the Outstanding Volunteer Engagement Award for the highest participation rate across the University departments.

Our student helpers are essential to the Library’s success. To celebrate their invaluable contributions, we hosted a Helper Appreciation Party on March 31. The event was a wonderful opportunity for helpers to connect with their peers, build team spirit, and simply enjoy a well-deserved break with good food and company. A highlight of the celebration was the presentation of the Outstanding Student Helper Award, recognizing students who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, initiative, and a passion for learning. We were proud to honour five remarkable individuals.
