As a Hongkonger, I like to browse information about Hong Kong’s past through various media. When I look at posts and photos of Hong Kong’s past, I have an opportunity to see things that remind me of my childhood, which makes me feel excited.
In our library, there are many books and periodicals that discuss Hong Kong’s past. Some of them are pictorial works with illustrations of old Hong Kong. They are “Popular books” that enable users to explore Hong Kong’s history through a relaxing journey.
As a staff member responsible for purchasing library materials, I discovered a printed periodical, “Being Hong Kong 就係香港” which attracted my attention. It has been published quarterly by Being Media Ltd (就係媒體有限公司) since 2018. Each issue has its own theme related to Hong Kong’s humanities, urban planning, transportation, residence, and more.
The Autumn 2024 issue in our library discusses residence in Hong Kong. I learned about the history and development of Hong Kong’s public housing estates through words and photos. The architectural style of different housing estates reflected how the government and voluntary organizations have tried to improve our lives. Besides living space, architects also pay attention to public space. Public space is an area not only for living but also for engagement.
In addition, this periodical provides us with information related to recent news. For example, it mentions the reconstruction plans of Choi Hung Estate and Wah Fu Estate.
This periodical includes words and photos of Hong Kong from past to present, allowing us to realize the changes in our community through reading. It uses fun and relaxing ways to make us aware of our community.
It is available for loan in the library. The 4 most recent issues are shelved as current periodicals, which located on the G/F near the library garden. Older issues are shelved as periodicals, which located on the LG4 area of bound periodicals.
