Do you dare to take the challenge? Explain your thesis in three minutes!

What Is 3MT?

3MT Competition Logo

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition was founded by The University of Queensland (UQ) to help research students sharpen their academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The challenge? Present your research in just three minutes using language that anyone—especially the non-specialists—can understand.

At HKUST, the competition started in 2014 with the School of Engineering, and has been open to all HKUST MPhil and PhD candidates since 2018.

Why Join?

Research is meant to be conveyed, and it’s an important skill to be able to share your results with non-specialists. It’s a challenge, it can be fun, and it might look nice on your CV. Plus, there’s a money prize

  • 8,000 HKD for the Champion
  • 5,000 HKD for the 1st Runner up
  • 2,000 HKD for the 2nd Runner up
  • 2,000 HKD for the “People’s Choice”

Bonus: If the Asia-Pacific 3MT competition resumes in person in 2025, the champion will receive a 15,000 HKD travel grant!

How Does It Work?

  • Apply on or before March 17, 2025
  • Pre-selection will happen March 19-20
  • 8 Finalists will be notified by March 24
  • Final will be held on April 9
