From Aug 2024 to Aug 2025, scholars from HKUST have published a total of 17 books, as indicated in our Institutional Repository.
Among these, nine books fall under the category of science & tech, and eight books are related to business, humanities and social sciences.
In this post, we will focus on the nine titles that cover topics in science and technology. The books in business and HSS will be featured in another post. For books that have been authored or edited by two or more individuals, the name of the HKUST member is denoted by an asterisk.

Edited by Daniel C.W. Tsang* and Xiaohong Zhu
See availability in Library
High-Volume Mineral Admixtures in Cementitious Binders: Towards Carbon-Neutral Construction delivers an overview of the broad applications of high-volume supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in cementitious binders, addressing the most promising ways to use them to reduce carbon emissions in the construction and building industry.
Latency Optimization in Interactive Multimedia Streaming
By Zili Meng* and Mingwei Xu
See availability in Library
This book begins by introducing the fundamentals of network latency, elucidating its sources from both data plane and control plane, along with its effects on user experience. Furthermore, it explores the various components contributing latency, including the application layer, transport layer, and network layer. The book then delves into the ongoing research efforts aimed at reducing the latency of these components individually.

Advances in Bio-Based Materials for Construction and Energy Efficiency
Edited by Fernando Pacheco-Torgal and Daniel C.W. Tsang*
See availability in Library
This book fills a gap in the published literature, discussing bio-based materials and biotechnologies that are crucial for a more sustainable construction industry. With comprehensive coverage and contributions from leading experts in the field, the book includes sections on bio-based materials and biotechnologies for infrastructure applications, bio-based materials and biotechnologies for building energy efficiency, and other applications, such as using biotechnology to reduce indoor air pollution, for water treatment, and in soil decontamination. The book will be an essential reference resource for academic researchers, civil engineers, contractors working in construction works, postgraduate students and other professionals.
Advanced Unsaturated Soil Mechanics: Theory and Applications (2nd Edition)
By Charles W.W.Ng*, Chao Zhou and Junjun Ni*
See availability in Library
Unsaturated soil is a three-phase material that is ubiquitous on the Earth’s surface and exhibits complex behaviour, which becomes more complex in response to the Earth’s changing climate and increasing engineering activities. This is because the former affects its moisture and temperature conditions significantly and the latter governs its stress state and suction condition. This book is designed to meet the increasing challenges of climate change and engineering activities by covering the mechanics and engineering of unsaturated soil in a logical manner.
Managing Software Supply Chains: Theory and Practice
By Ying Wang , Shing-Chi Cheung* , Hai Yu , Zhiliang Zhu
See availability in Library
This book offers ecosystem-wide solutions, and tools, and datasets to combat dependency hell issues, provides a comprehensive literature review on software supply chains, and explores the changing landscape of software supply chains in the era of large language models
Machine Learning for Low-Latency Communications
By Yong Zhou, Yinan Zou, Youlong Wu, Yuanming Shi, Jun Zhang*
See availability in Library
This book presents the principles and practice of various deep learning methodologies for mitigating three critical latency components: access latency, transmission latency, and processing latency. In particular, the book develops learning to estimate methods via algorithm unrolling and multiarmed bandit for reducing access latency by enlarging the number of concurrent transmissions with the same pilot length. Task-oriented learning to compress methods based on information bottleneck are given to reduce the transmission latency via avoiding unnecessary data transmission.
Portfolio Optimization: Theory and Practice
By Daniel P. Palomar*
See description at the publisher’s website
This comprehensive guide to the world of financial data modeling and portfolio design is a must-read for anyone looking to understand and apply portfolio optimization in a practical context. It bridges the gap between mathematical formulations and the design of practical numerical algorithms. It explores a range of methods, from basic time series models to cutting-edge financial graph estimation approaches. The portfolio formulations span from Markowitz’s original 1952 mean–variance portfolio to more advanced formulations, including downside risk portfolios, drawdown portfolios, risk parity portfolios, robust portfolios, bootstrapped portfolios, index tracking, pairs trading, and deep-learning portfolios.
