Welcome back to the new semester! In this post, we are happy to share the changes we have made to our library’s support for Open Access transformative publishing.
New Agreements
In our ongoing efforts to contribute to knowledge creation and exchange, we have started new agreements with the following organizations and publishers to promote OA publishing in 2024:
- American Society of Mechanical Engineers
- IOP Publishing
- Rockefeller University Press
- Royal Society of Chemistry
- Springer Nature
- Wiley
Renewed Agreements
In addition to the new agreements, the following agreements are renewed to ensure continued support for OA publishing:
- American Institute of Mathematical Sciences
- Cambridge University Press
- Company of Biologists
- Microbiology Society
- Royal Society
- SCOAP3
These twelve agreements support OA publishing at no cost to corresponding authors affiliated with HKUST. Extra costs for these upgrades are borne by the Library. Please visit this page for details.
Three-Year Review of the CUP OA Publishing Outcome
The Cambridge University Press (CUP) Read and Publish agreement is the first transformative agreement delivered by the Library, and we would like to highlight its particularly high outcomes over the past three years.
The table below shows the growth in OA publications and associated cost savings during the contract period:
CUP Contract Year | Number of OA Publications | APC Saving (HKD) |
2021 | 7 | 18,240 |
2022 | 9 (28.6% ↑) | 27,700 (51.1% ↑) |
2023 | 16 (77.78% ↑) | 51,400 (85.41% ↑) |
Alternative Pathways to OA
We encourage all researchers to take full advantage of these agreements and publishing venues to share their works. Apart from the traditional OA pathways that require article processing charges (APCs), we also want to highlight alternative options. Researchers can explore “Diamond OA” or “Platinum OA”, where both reading and publishing are free of charge. One way to search and browse Diamond OA journals is through the DOAJ directory.
Additionally, researchers can achieve OA by depositing their manuscripts in the institutional repository, which is often referred to as “self-archiving” or “Green OA”, and this library guide shows which version of your work is acceptable for institutional self-archiving.
