Orientation Season Recap: Hundreds of New Faces
Another orientation season has wrapped up at the HKUST Library, and it was a real pleasure to welcome so many new faces. Whether you joined us in person or on Zoom, thank you for spending part of your first busy weeks with us. Here’s a quick look back.
Undergraduate Orientation: 6 Floors of Beauty & Wonder
New undergraduates explored the Library through “Tour the Library: 6 Floors of Beauty & Wonder.” Twelve guided walks, led by librarians, welcomed 85 students.
The tours covered all six floors - from the busy Learning Commons to quieter upper-level study spots. Students discovered collaborative spaces, cozy corners, collections, and service points. Many were surprised by how much the Library offers beyond books. Several groups stayed to ask questions and claim a favorite seat.
Postgraduate Orientation:
Flexible, Focused, Research-Ready
Postgraduates received a hybrid welcome across 15 sessions (Zoom and in-person). A total of 417 students took part.
The sessions showed students around the Library’s spaces and service desks, walked them through finding and using research databases and online resources, introduced Research Support services (including one-on-one Research Coaching and Researchers’ Series Workshops - a six-stage program that guides you through the research cycle).
Our goal was simple: help new postgraduate students feel comfortable with the Library’s services, support, and resources as they begin their studies at HKUST.
Missed the Tours? No Problem
Whether due to a scheduling clash or other commitments, you can still explore the Library from your chair:
- Library Orientation Game - a browser-based Unity game developed in-house with AI assistance. Quest-based challenges help you discover spaces, resources, and citation practices in charming illustrations.
- 360° Virtual Tour - explore every corner of the six floors at your own pace. All the views, none of the stairs.
