From August 2023 to July 2024, scholars from HKUST have published a total of 19 books, as indicated in our Institutional Repository.
Among these, seven books fall under the category of science & tech, and twelve books are related to business, humanities and social sciences.
In this post, we will focus on the seven titles that cover topics in science and technology. The books in business and HSS will be featured in another post. For books that have been authored or edited by two or more individuals, the name of the HKUST member is denoted by an asterisk and is linked to their scholar profile.
Privacy-preserving Computing for Big Data Analytics and AI
By Kai Chen* and Qiang Yang*
See availability in Library
The book shows how to use privacy-preserving computing in real-world problems in data analytics and AI, and includes applications in statistics, database queries, and machine learning. The book begins by introducing cryptographic techniques such as secret sharing, homomorphic encryption, and oblivious transfer, and then broadens its focus to more widely applicable techniques such as differential privacy, trusted execution environment, and federated learning. The book ends with privacy-preserving computing in practice in areas like finance, online advertising, and healthcare, and finally offers a vision for the future of the field.
Digital Watermarking for Machine Learning Model: Techniques, Protocols and Applications
Edited by Lixin Fan, Chee Seng Chan, and Qiang Yang*
See availability in Library
The first book to address the use of digital watermarking for verifying machine learning model ownerships. It presents essential protocols, methodologies and techniques for protecting machine learning models using watermarking, and provides a novel perspective for researchers in the machine learning security & privacy community
Fundamental Behavior of Unsaturated Widely-Graded Soil: The Hydraulic and Mechanic Behavior of Coarse-fine Mixed Soil and its Influence on Slope Stability
By Xu Li, Hongfen Zhao, and Li Min Zhang*
See availability in Library
The first book available on behavior of widely graded soils (WGS), such as residual soil, colluvial soil, landfill. It introduces systematic research on the fabric, hydraulic properties, and mechanical properties of WGS and reports the technique for measuring the properties of WGS, as well as a design chart for WGS
Single-Cell Assays: Microfluidics, Genomics, and Drug Discovery
Edited by Paul C.H. Li, Angela Ruohao Wu*
